We all love to travel. Its the thrill of going to new places and the jaw dropping scenes that pumps our adrenaline.
But what about the budget and our busy schedule ?
Well that’s not an issue. Last year I visited a place called Dhotrey, a small settlement, amidst the forest of sub Himalayan Bengal. From there a small trek to Tonglu. And all it cost me is Rs. 2300 (depending on lodging and fooding) and 3 days and 2 nights.
Dhotrey – Tonglu trek route
Itinerary: Reach Siliguri by morning – from there take a jeep to Dhotrey – stay the night – next day trek to Tonglu – spend the night there – next morning trek down to ManeBhanjan via Meghma and Chitrey – from ManeBhanjan you will find jeeps to Siliguri.
If you are on a short budget or on a tight schedule, this trek might be just the perfect fit for you. And oh! the scenes of lovely forests of Rhododendron, Pine, Fir, Birch Bamboo Glades and the breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga range from the view point of Tonglu, will definitely going to leave you speechless!!
And here are some sneak peaks……

Origin
In the history of Indian politics, political mobilization had influenced a shift in art and culture. The first such moment occurred in the 1930s and 1940s which led to greater radicalization of the struggle for freedom. It saw the simultaneous formation of Progressive Writers Association (1936) and Indian People’s Theatre Association.
The Indian Progressive Writers Association was actually established in London by the expatriate Indian students who were inspired by the setting up of Anti-fascist Writers’ and Writers’ Association.
Group Theatres of Bengal
Bengal is considered to has a strong culture for group theatres. As opposed to commercial theatres, group theatres is not commercial, characterized by its tendency for experimenting theme, content and production.
The play Nabanna in 1944 is said to be the birth of group theatres in Kolkata. Nabanna was written by Bijon Bhattacharya, who also co-directed it with Sambhu Mitra. They were both active members of the IPTA.
The drama Nabanna portrayed a group of peasants as victim of the famine. The peasants had to leave their village due to famine, and they traveled to Kolkata with the hope for survival in the big city. However, they faced a series of crises and eventually got “…reduced to the most abject acknowledge poverty in Kolkata, where they develop a political awareness of their suffering”. Another production of IPTA was Jobanbondi.
Hi, I’m Debanjan. Stuck in University studies, doing my P.G. About blogging people told me that its like writing a diary in the 21st century. A dairy which you guys have access to.
I love travelling. My philosophy is that in order to find ourselves we must be lost first. And I can can help you with that. Following are 4 places/treks that can help you in this journey of finding yourselves.
1. Sandakphu Trek
Sandakphu is not only the most popular trek in West Bengal but it is also one of the best treks in Eastern India. At an altitude of 3636 meters or 11930 feet, this is the highest point in Bengal. Aptly called the Paradise of Trekkers, the peak is a vantage point from where one can see four of the world’s five highest peaks – Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Lhotse – in a continuous snow-clad arc.

2. Phoktey Dara Trek
Phoktey Dara is Situated at 3733mtr and famous for Rhododendrons and different species of birds. For the majestic sunrise and sunset, Phoktey Dara Top is considered as a very extraordinary view point of Sikkim and relatively lesser known trekking trail in West Sikkim.

3. Maenam HillTrek
This is a short trek. Best suited for those who are in a tight schedule and budget.
Maenam Hill situated at an altitude of 3140 m, is popular place for offering the most promising views of the richly forested hills contrasting with the lustrous Mt. Khangchendzonga behind. The treks to Maenam Hill come as a combined visit to the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary, where one can spot the rare species of Himalayan birds and animals amidst their natural habitat.
There are regular buses or shared taxis available from Namchi to reach Maenam.
Barsey, also spelled Varsey is a Rhododendron Sanctuary and a nature preserve inside West Sikkim. The gentle walk from Hilley to Barsey inside pristine jungle is probably one of the finest in Sikkim. More than 250 cm of rainfall and above 2000 m of altitude makes the prevailing climate of this area wet and cold.
These are my recomendations to get you started. Later I will post my experiences for each one of them. So from where you are starting ?
Mountaineering, it is not trek or vacation that you go with your friends for fun, it is hardcore climbing which requires courage, faith, patience, wisdom. It is really tough, to be a mountaineer there are series of steps, rigorous training, a proper system that you have to follow before you even dream to be on top of the world. With Dhaula Dhar Range, East Karakoram Range, Zanskar Range, Ladakh Range and Pir Panjal Range, there are immense climbing and mountaineering opportunities in India.

I started this blog to share my little experiences that I have gained through years of travelling and also to know your experiences. But as I continue this blog you may find that this blog is pretty much biased towards mountains. Ok let me just accept it I am into mountains. But it does not mean that I don’t like beaches or new cities or any new places, most importantly I love travelling but for me it’s the mountains which have everything…..thrill, suspense, fear, joy, disappointment….drama.
Once we are halting at Lingtam. After our dinner we put on our jackets and went for a walk, the road was through a jungle, we are young, took a turn into the jungle, later down the hill that led us to a waterfall. Believe me what a beauty it was. It was full moon night, the bright moon light was glittering on the water, chill winds, we were sitting on the rocks beside the stream, oh! it was perfect.
And I love the people there, which acts as a catalyst for my love for the mountains. Its also got a story, last year at Tonglu I was running short on my budget, staying at a home-stay and trying to cut my expenses on food. The owner offered me chicken curry and said, ” you don’t have to pay for this, it will be my pleasure.” Such beautiful they are.
